Biological evidence — physiology, behavior, neurology, observed welfare indicators — supersedes cultural tradition, economic convenience, personal preference, aesthetic taste, or industry practice in determining animal welfare standards. When tradition or economics conflicts with biology, biology wins. Only scientific evidence can inform welfare judgments.

What this principle establishes

The epistemological hierarchy in Animal Welfare. Animal experience is empirical (we can investigate it scientifically), not normative (we don't decide what they feel based on what's convenient for us). When humans want to do something to animals and tradition or economics says "fine," biology may say otherwise — and biology wins.

Implications

  • Tradition is not justification for causing suffering. Centuries of practice don't make a practice ethical.
  • Economic benefit does not override welfare concerns. A profitable practice can still be wrong.
  • Personal taste does not determine what animals feel. "I don't think my pet is suffering" is not evidence.
  • Cultural relativism does not extend to harming sentient beings. Local tradition cannot justify what evidence forbids.

Why locked (not immutable)

The principle itself (evidence > non-evidence-based claims) is foundational and should be very hard to weaken. However, the standards of evidence (what counts as scientific, how to weigh competing studies, evidence tier definitions) may need to evolve as research methodology matures. LOCKED allows refinement through high-bar governance vote without making the underlying epistemological commitment vulnerable.
